Project ‘Colour4CRAFTS’
The Colour4CRAFTS project, funded by Horizon Europe, explores the long history of textile dyeing while simultaneously developing innovative technological solutions for the modern textile industry.
Knowledge from the past may offer promising ideas for the researchers who are looking for a more environmentally friendly alternative to the current industrial textile dyeing process. The working group of one of the project's partners – the University of Tartu – is led by Riina Rammo, an associate professor of archaeology. By analysing archaeological and ethnographic textiles, the aim is to determine which plants and lichens have been used to dye them and what the dyeing process may have been like. The textile and manuscript collections of the Estonian National Museum are valuable to the project’s research objectives, as they help identify historical skills, techniques, and dyes.At the end of 2025, the ‘Let’s Add Colour to Life!’ exhibition will be open for public viewing at the ENM, offering the visitor a look into the past and future-oriented discoveries of the ongoing project.
On 14 January 2025, a webinar titled ‘Textile Dyes for Tomorrow: How Does the Past Inform the Future’ will take place in English. All interested parties are welcome to watch the broadcast.
