The Birth of an Icon
Open in B-Lobby from 9 August to 24 September 2023The exhibition The Birth of an Icon introduces the making of embossed wooden icons, the traditional craft of Old Believers. In Peipsimaa, this tradition was brought to life by local Old Believer, artist and craftsman Pavel Varunin.
The exhibition introduces the history of embossed icons and the earlier tradition with examples from Byzantine art. The display includes the reference drawings of icons. The stages of crafting a carved wooden icon are also described and can be viewed on a sample icon. Additionally, visitors can explore the tools used to make icons.
The exhibition is curated and designed by artist Eve Valper.
The exhibition is open in the B-Lobby of the Estonian National Museum from 9 August to 24 September, Tue-Sun 10:00-18:00.
